Lifelong Learning
As the flagship European Funding programme in the field of education and training, the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) enables individuals at all stages of their lives to pursue stimulating learning opportunities across Europe. It is an umbrella programme integrating various educational and training initiatives. LLP is divided in four sectorial sub programmes and four so called 'transversal' programmes.

Comenius
The Comenius programme focuses on the first phase of education, from pre-school and primary to secondary schools. It is relevant for all members of the education community: pupils, teachers, public authorities, parents’ associations, non-government organisations, teacher training institutes, universities and all other educational staff.

Erasmus
The ERASMUS programme was launched in June 1987 and in 2007 celebrated its 20th anniversary. It is arguably one of the best-known Community actions and encourages student and teacher mobility through decentralised actions implemented by National Agencies and promotes though centralised actions the transnational cooperation among Higher Education Institutions across Europe managed by the Executive Agency.

Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci focuses on vocational education and training, other than at tertiary level. It addresses both the learning and teaching needs in the sector, and is therefore aimed at all parties involved, namely trainees in vocational education, teachers and trainers, institutions and educational bodies, enterprises, associations, social partners and bodies relating to either lifelong learning or the labour market.

Grundtvig Programme
Launched in 2000 and now part of the overarching Lifelong Learning Programme, Grundtvig aims to provide adults with ways to improve their knowledge and skills, keeping them mentally fit and potentially more employable.
It not only covers learners in adult education, but also the teachers, trainers, education staff and facilities that provide these services. These include relevant associations, counselling organisations, information services, policy-making bodies and others involved in lifelong learning and adult education at local, regional and national levels, such as NGOs, enterprises, voluntary groups and research centres.

Policy cooperation and innovation in Lifelong Learning (KA1)
The Key Activity of Policy cooperation and innovation in Lifelong learning is supporting policy development and cooperation, notably in the context of the Lisbon process and the Education and Training 2010 work programme, as well as the Bologna and Copenhagen processes and their successors.
Its objectives are to achieve comparative analyses of educational systems in the EU, with a view to ensuring an adequate supply of comparable data, statistics and analysis to underpin lifelong learning policy development, as well as to monitor progress towards objectives and targets in lifelong learning and to identify areas requiring particular attention.

Languages (KA2)
This key activity aims to raise awareness of the importance of acquiring linguistic skills, boost access to language- learning resources and develop teaching materials.

Information and communication technologies - ICT (KA3)
Effective integration of ICT into education must go beyond simply replacing, streamlining or accelerating current practices. It must also find new and more effective ways of operating, supporting pedagogical and organisational innovation. ICT has become embedded in our social and economic fabric and it should be similarly embedded in education and training systems.
Actions are not about developing technology itself, but about the use of ICT tools to enhance learning environments and experiences. This includes aspects such as the use of simulations, discovery learning, attracting drop-outs back to education, enabling learning outside the school environment and bridging the 'digital divide' between those with access to technologies and relevant skills, and those without.

Dissemination and Exploitation of Results (KA4)
The Key Activity 4 'Dissemination and Exploitation of Results' aims at promoting the creation of a framework for the effective exploitation of the results of the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP), and also previous related programmes, at sectoral, regional, national and European levels.
The operational objective of KA4 is to ensure that the results of the LLP are appropriately recognised, demonstrated and implemented on a wide scale.

Jean Monnet
The Jean Monnet programme aims at stimulating teaching, research and reflection in the field of European integration studies at the level of higher education institutions within and outside the European Community.

Youth in Action
Youth in Action is the Programme the European Union has set up for young people. It aims to inspire a sense of active European citizenship, solidarity and tolerance among young Europeans and to involve them in shaping the Union's future.

Seventh Framework Programme (FP7)

FP7-Cooperation
The specific programme on 'Cooperation' supports all types of research activities carried out by different research bodies in trans-national cooperation and aims to gain or consolidate leadership in key scientific and technology areas.

FP7-Ideas
The objective of the specific programme ‘Ideas’ is to reinforce excellence, dynamism and creativity in European research and improve the attractiveness of Europe for the best researchers from both European and third countries, as well as for industrial research investment, by providing a Europe-wide competitive funding structure, in addition to and not replacing national funding, for ‘frontier research’ executed by individual teams. Communication and dissemination of research results is an important aspect of this programme.

FP7-People
In the Seventh Framework Programme, the 'Marie Curie Actions' have been regrouped and reinforced in the 'People' Specific Programme. Entirely dedicated to human resources in research, this Specific Programme has a significant overall budget of more than € 4,7 billion over a seven year period until 2013, which represents a 50% average annual increase over FP6.

FP7-Capacities
The Commission’s proposals for the FP7 Capacities programme aim to enhance research and innovation capacities throughout Europe and ensure their optimal use. The Capacities programme is provided with a budget of EUR 4 097 million to operate in seven broad areas:
- Research infrastructures
- Research for the benefit of SMEs
- Regions of knowledge and support for regional research-driven clusters
- Research potential of Convergence Regions
- Science in society
- Support to the coherent development of research policies
- International cooperation

FP7-Euratom
Euratom energy research activities are carried out under the treaty with the same name, which in 1957 established the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). Euratom is legally separated from the European Community (EC) and has its own Framework Research Programme, however managed by the common Community institutions.
Although Member States retain most competencies in energy policy, whether based on nuclear or other sources, the Euratom Treaty has achieved an important degree of harmonisation at European level. It legislates for a number of specific tasks for the management of nuclear resources and research activities.

Interreg IVC
INTERREG IVC provides funding for interregional cooperationacross Europe. It is implemented under the European Community’s territorial co-operation objective and financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The Operational Programmewas approved in September 2007 and the period for INTERREG IVC will last from 2007-2013.
